Abstract:

PURPOSE: To form the composite material which is free from internal defects by adding short fibrous reinforcing materials mixed with Al particles to an Al alloy while stirring the alloy in a vacuum to a half-melted and solidified state, then adding an inert gas to thereto just prior to casting.

CONSTITUTION: The Al alloy contg. Si, etc., is melted in the vacuum kept under 1-1×10-4Torr and the temp. thereof is gradually lowered under stirring, by which the alloy is put into the half-melted and solidified state. The short fibrous reinforcing materials such as SiC previously mixed with the Al alloy particles are added to the alloy while the alloy is kept stirred in this state. The inert gas such as Ar is added to the alloy just prior to casting and after 760-10Torr degree of the vacuum is attained, the alloy is cast and the composite material of the Al metal is obtd. This composite material has an excellent wear resistance characteristic, high strength and high elasticity and is, therefore, suitable for applications as sporting goods, mechanical parts and parts for automobiles.
