PURPOSE: To produce a concd. compd. having a carbonyl group and/or a carboxyl group from an inexpensive raw material by catalytically oxidizing a polyhydric alcohol in the presence of a catalyst having specified catalytic component and physical properties.
CONSTITUTION: At least one kind of catalyst component is selected from ≥1 kind of first catalytic component selected from platinum, etc., alone, a combination of the first catalytic component and ≥1 kind of second catalytic component selected from lead, etc., a third catalytic component selected from the first catalytic component and rare-earth elements, and a combination of the first, second and third catalytic components. A polyhydric alcohol having ≥1 primary hydroxyl group and secondary hydroxyl group is catalytically oxidized in the presence of a catalyst obtained by depositing the catalytic component on a carrier having at least one physical property selected from ≥500m2/g specific surface, ≤800g/l bulk density, ≥0.3ml/g pore volume and ≤20nm average pore diameter and consisting of an activated carbon contg. ≤15wt.% ash and/or carbon black.
