PURPOSE: To obtain copper phthalocyanine (or a derivative thereof) useful as dye and pigment with good productivity and in high yields, by a method wherein a copper compd. and urea (or a derivative) are molten, and the resulting molten product is reacted with phthalic acid (or a derivative) in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In the synthesis of copper phthalocyanine (or a derivative thereof), firstly, a copper compd. (e.g. cuprous chloride or cupric chloride) and urea alone or together with its derivative) are molten by heating, and kept at 100W130°C for 1W 24hr. To the resulting molten product are added phthalic acid and/or its derivative (e.g. phthalimide) and a catalyst (e.g. ammonium molybdate or molybdenum oxide). The mixture is heated pref. in an inert reaction medium to effect the reaction between the reactants to produce the desired copper phthalocyanine. When the catalyst is added and molten during the preparation of the molten material, the amount of the catalyst to be used can be reduced.
