PURPOSE: To obtain geraniin, by extracting a plant of Aceraceae family with an organic solvent.

CONSTITUTION: The dried leaf of a plant of Aceraceae family (e.g. Acer nikoense, Acer buergerianum, Acer saccharum, Acer palmatum, etc.; the stalk and root thereof can be used as well as the leaf) is crushed roughly, mixed with a mixture of acetone and water, and stirred to effect the extraction of the component. The extract is concentrated under reduced pressure, and the obtained liquid is repeatedly extracted with an organic solvent such as ethyl acetate. The extract remaining after the evaporation of the organic solvent in vacuum is subjected e.g. to the combination of the liquid-drop counter-current partition chromatography and the recrystallization from a methanol-water mixture at room temperature, or to the fractionation of the extract by the column chromatography using a polyvinyl resin, etc., to separate geraniin. The compound has astringent action, intestine-controlling action, preventive action to canceration, hypotensive action, etc., is free from the characteristic astringency of tannin and is useful as pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics, etc.
