Abstract:

PURPOSE: To enable simultaneous production of glycerin and diglycerin almost free from cyclic diglycerin by reacting epichlorohydrin with an aqueous alkalline solution having a specified composition at a specified temperature and under the pressure of carbon deoxide gas.

CONSTITUTION: Epichlorohydrin is reacted with an aqueous alkalline solution of a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate having a mixture ratio of (1:0.75)-(1:3.5) on weight base at 110-150°C, preferably 130-140°C and at an applied pressure of carbon dioxide gas to simultaneously obtain the objective glycerin and diglycerin. In addition, the total amount of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is preferably 14-18wt.% as the concentration of the aqueous alkalline solution.
