PURPOSE: To produce a hydrocarbon fuel with a high selectivity from a specified hydrocarbon feedstock by bringing the feedstock into contact with a specific catalyst in the presence of H2 at elevated temp. and pressure.
CONSTITUTION: This hydrocarbon fuel is produced from a hydrocarbon feedstock obtd. by a Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and comprising a fraction (e.g. a heavy wax having a b.p. range of 370°C or higher) having a b.p. above the b.p. range of the hydrocarbon fuel by bringing the feed into contact with a catalyst at an elevated temp., pref. 175-400°C. still pref. 250-375°C, under an elevated pressure in the presence of H2. The catalyst comprises a silica-alumina carrier impregnated with platinum and is prepd. by bringing a silica-alumina carrier into contact with a platinum salt (e.g. hexachloroplatinic acid) in the presence of a liq. (e.g. water) under acidic conditions (e.g. by nitric acid).
