To obtain a uniform and stable liquid crystal alignment state and a pretilt angle by first irradiating polarized UV rays to regulate the alignment direction of a liquid crystal, then rotating a transparent substrate, and irradiating the substrate with polarized UV rays to regulate the pretilt angle.
First, a UV-reactive liquid crystal alignment layer is formed on one or both of a pair of transparent substrate. Then the liquid crystal alignment layer on the transparent substrate parallel to the referential plane is irradiated with polarized UV rays (first irradiation). As for the light source of polarized UV rays, an electrodeless discharge type UV lamp with high output and a long life is preferably used. Then the transparent substrate on which the liquid crystal alignment layer irradiated with the polarized UV rays by the first irradiation is rotated on the referential plane. The substrate is rotated in such a manner that the alignment direction of the liquid crystal regulated by the previous process is changed into a different direction. Then the liquid crystal alignment layer on the rotated transparent substrate is again irradiated with polarized UV rays so as to develop the pretilt angle (second irradiation).
