To provide a technology to efficiently produce reduced iron having a little mixed amount of the slag component and high Fe purity without needing pre-formation into bulky state or pellet state and even in the case of using the low grade iron oxide source as well as the high grade iron oxide source.
The mixture of iron oxide-containing powder and carbonaceous reducing agent-containing powder is heated, reduced and melted under a condition of laying it on a furnace hearth 3 to obtain a metallic iron. In this method, since the reduced iron produced with the reduction by heat is suceedingly melted by heat and the metallic irons are mutually melted/stuck to each other and coagulated while rejecting the slag component, even in the case of using iron oxide source of low grade iron, the reduced iron having extremely low mixed quantity of the slag component and high Fe purity can be obtd.
