Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject high-purity compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals and liquid crystals in high yield, by reacting a m-t-butoxyalkylbenzene with a highly concentrated aqueous solution of sulfuric acid in the presence of a solvent.
SOLUTION: A p- or m-tert-butoxybenzenemagnesium halide of formula I (X is Cl, Br or I) is reacted with an alkyl halide of the formula CH3-(CH2)-X ((n) is 1-6) in the presence of a copper halide to give p- or m-tert- butoxyalkylbenzene of formula II, which is reacted with 60-85% aqueous solution of sulfuric acid in the presence of a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran or an alcohol-based solvent to give the objective compound of formula III. The compound of formula II is a new compound.
