Abstract:

PURPOSE: The reaction between phenol and an aliphatic saturated monocarboxylic acid is conducted using a catalyst of AlaBbPcSidXeOf that has long service life and is regerated by simple procedures to produce title compound in high selectivity.

CONSTITUTION: The gas-phase reaction of phenol and a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid as acetic acid is effected in the presence of a catalyst of the formula (X is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ca, Mg, Bi, Ba, Be, Sr, Mn, Fe, Mo; aWf shows atomic ratios wherein when a is 1, b is 1W3; C, 1W4; d, 0.05W0.5; e, 0.05W0.5; f is determined depending upon atomic numbers of aWe) to produce a phenol ester as phenyl acetate. For example Al(OH)3, orthoboric acid, orthophosphoric acid, silica sol, Ca(NO3)2 and water give a catalyst with an atomic ratio of 1:1.67:2.67:0.13:0.13 in Al:B:P:Ca.
