PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer emulsion having a controllable particle diameter, by polymerizing a radical-polymerizable unsaturated bond-containing monomer with the aid of an initiator in an aqueous medium in the presence of a specified water-soluble copolymer.
CONSTITUTION: An ethylenically unsaturated, nitrogen-containing compound or its monoalkyl-substituted product is copolymerized with an ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid or a compound of its salt with the aid of a redox initiator to form a water-soluble copolymer. Then, a radical-polymerizable unsaturated bond-containing monomer is stably polymerized with the aid of a water- soluble initiator in an aqueous medium in the presence of the water-soluble copolymer. Examples of the ethylenically unsaturated nitrogen-containing compounds include acrylamide, N-methylolacrylamide and methacrylamide. As the ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acids, there can be used vinylsulfonic acid, allylsulfonic acid, 2-methylallylsulfonic acid, etc.
