Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing polypropylene in a gas-phase fluidized bed polymerizer of a multistage reaction type, whereby the productivity (in terms of catalyst) is improved and the average dwell time is reduced by adopting a specific process.
SOLUTION: Polypropylene is produced by continuously bringing propylene (or its mixture) into contact, in two reaction zones connected in series under gas-phase polymn. conditions, with a catalyst system which contains a solid particulate catalyst component contg. Mg, Ti, a halogen, and a carboxylic ester, a hydrocarbylaluminum cocatalyst, and a silicon compd. contg. a silicon- oxygen-carbon bond or a carboxylic ester. In the above process, the catalyst system is introduced into the first reaction zone; the catalyst system is partially deactivated with a deactivator in the first reaction zone or the first series of reaction zones and simultaneously the monomer level is increased; and the resultant resin and the catalyst system residue are transferred to the next zone wherein the deactivator is purged or an activator is added. If necessary, these steps are repeated.
