To obtain the subject acrylate under conditions of high safety with slightly forming octene having difficulty in separation by specifying the molar ratio of acrylic acid to butene in a reaction.
In reacting (A) acrylic acid with (B) at least one butene in the presence of a macroporous cation resin containing a sulfonic group, the molar ratio of the component A to the component B in the reaction is ≥1. Since the reaction composition comprises residual acrylic acid, dissolved butene isomers, desired sec-butyl acrylate, octane, butanol 2 and a heavy addition product, the desired sec-butyl acrylate is separated from the reaction composition. Preferably the molar ratio of the component A/component B is 1.5 to 3/1 and one or a mixture of two or more of butene-1, cis-butene and trans-butene is used as the component B.
