Abstract:
PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of cracking at the terminal end of a soot preform in the production of a soot preform with a number of clad-forming burners by VAD process.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of a soot preform by a VAD process using two or more clad-forming burners 2, 3, the flame temperature of the clad- forming burners 2, 3 is raised at the end of the soot preform production process from the temperature of the normal production condition. A hardened layer 7 is formed on the surface at the terminal end of the soot preform 6 by this process.
