Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve a binder to be used in the production of spherical active carbon fiber from tar pitch.

CONSTITUTION: Fine powder of a coal-based and/or petroleum-based pitch preferably having particle diameter of 3-10μm is dispersed in water at a concentration of 15-30wt.% and the obtained binder suspension is used as a binder for the spheroidization of raw material fibers. The productivity can be improved and a spherical active carbon fiber can be produced on an industrial scale at a low cost compared with the conventional process to use a resin solution as the binder.
