Abstract:

PURPOSE: To easily obtain at low cost in an industrially advantageous way a tea leaf saponin useful for the food area, medicines, quasi-drugs etc., by subjecting the hot water extraction residues of tea leaves to extraction with a hydrous lower alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: Tea leaves such as of Camellia sinensis (L) are subjected, either directly or, after steamed or put to normal tea manufacturing process, to hot water extraction; and the resultant extraction residues are further subjected to extraction with a hydrous lower alcohol such as hydrous methanol (pref. composed of 30-50wt.% of water and 70-50wt.% of a lower alcohol). Next, the resultant extract liquid is pref. either treated with water-insoluble polyvinylpyrrolidone or extraction-treated with ethyl acetate to remove the catechins existing in the above extract liquor.
