PURPOSE: To obtain in an industrially advantageous manner the title resin outstanding in heat distortion and impact resistances and molding processability, by emulsion polymerization, in the presence of, as the emulsifying agent, a combination of each specific two kinds of compounds, between an α-alkyl- substituted aromatic vinyl monomer and vinyl cyanide monomer.
CONSTITUTION: The objective resin can be obtained by emulsion polymerization between (1) an α-alkyl-substituted aromatic vinyl monomer (e.g. α-methylstyrene) and (2) a vinyl cyanide monomer [e.g. (meth)acrylonitrile] using, as the emulsifying agent, a combination of (A) a compound of formula (R is 10W24C alkyl or alkylene, M is Na or K) (e.g. dodecenylsuccinic acid) and (B) a second compound of formula R'XM (R' is 10W24C alkyl, alkylene or alkyl nuclear- substituted phenyl; X is carboxyl, sulfone or sulfate) (e.g. sodium laurate). The amount of the emulsifying agent to be use is pref. 0.2W3pts.wt. based on 100pts. wt. of the whole monomer.
