PURPOSE: To produce an urethane and carbonate at a high selectivity, high yield and high reaction rate without using toxic phosgene.
CONSTITUTION: N-ethyl(benzyl)amine, 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undese-7-ene (base) and tridecane are dissolved in tetrahydrofuran to prepare a carbamate soln., to which carbon dioxide is made to absorb at room temp. On the other hand, tris(dihenzylidene acetone)dipalladium and bis-diphenyl phophinoethane are dissolved in dry tetrahydrofuran to prepare a catalyst soln., to which allylchloride is added. While the palladium-allylchloride mixture is rapidly stirred at room temp., the carbamate soln. is added, and further carbon dioxide is added at 25°C to the mixture to cause the reaction to obtain urethane C6H5 CH2(C2H5)NCO2CHCH=CH2 as a white precipitate. When an alcohol is used instead of the amine, carbonate can be produced.
