Abstract:

To project a color image on a screen with higher contrast with, for example, a projection device like a single-chip type projector or the like.

When a color filter (400R) and a liquid crystal panel (100) are right opposite to each other on an optical axis (P) by rotation of a color wheel (400), an inclination direction (DR) of a major axis of a first refractive index ellipsoid (450) in a portion overlapping the color filter (400R), of an optical compensation plate (420) is along a rotation direction (Rd) within a range of an angle (R) defining a part occupied by the color filter (400R) along the rotation direction (Rd), namely, within a range of an angle from a division line (L0) dividing color filters (400R) and (400G) from each other to a division line (L2) dividing color filters (400R) and (400B) from each other.
