Abstract:

To provide a technique for reducing heat generation inside a projection display device.

Light from a light source device 10 is separated to three color component light beams, made linearly polarized light beams having a predetermined first polarization direction or a second polarization direction orthogonal to the first polarization direction by polarizing plates 31r, 31g and 31b, and made incident on liquid crystal panels 32r, 32g and 32b so as to be modulated based on an image signal. Then, the black image area of a display image is modulated to be expressed by the linearly polarized light beam having the first polarization direction. The modulated color component light beams are synthesized by a dichroic prism 40 and projected to a polarizing screen 120 which absorbs the linearly polarized light beam having the first polarization direction through a projection system lens 60. In the projection type display device 100A, since the polarizing plate is not provided on the emitting sides of the liquid crystal panels 32r, 32g and 32b, the linearly polarized light beam having the first polarization direction is absorbed by the polarizing screen 120 and generates heat.
