Abstract:

To provide a projection type display device which is made compact and allows images to be displayed in appropriate colors.

A color wheel 2 is disposed in an area (inside portion) interposed between a light beam L11 made incident on a total reflection mirror 6 and light beams L12, L13, and L14 reflected by the mirror 6. Thus the device is made more compact than a device having the color wheel 2 placed on the outside of the light beam L11 etc. The color wheel 2 is shaped like a disk divided into a plurality of color filter sections having different colors and is irradiated with light converged in such a shape as to pass through only one of color filter sections 2R, 2G, and 2B. Consequently, light is properly separated into spectral components to allow images to be displayed in appropriate colors.
