To provide a projection type video display device with a light source lamp which requires a cooling idle period during cooling operation, having a notification function so as to avoid misapprehension of the cooling idle period as a standby.

In the projection type video display device, a light source lamp 22 having a feature which requires a cooling idle period during which cooling is once stopped in a cooling operation after a projection operation is used. The projection type video display device has a cooling fan 41 for cooling the light source lamp 22, a speaker 52 for outputting a sound to notify an operation state and a control unit for controlling the operation of the cooling fan 41 and the sound output of the speaker 52. The control unit controls the cooling fan 41 and the speaker 52 to stop the cooling fan 41 and cause the speaker 52 to continuously output the sound during the cooling idle period.
