The projector 1000 has: a light source device 110; a rod integrator 300 for converting light rays from the light source device to light rays having uniform intensity distribution and projecting it from a projection plane; a pattern dim device 200 for dimming light rays projected from the rod integrator according to a dim pattern; an optical modulation device 350 for modulating light rays from the pattern dim device in accordance with image information; and a projection optical system 370 for projecting light modulated by the optical modulation device. The pattern dim device 200 is selected out of a plurality of dim patterns obtained by combining a light transmission section and a light decay section in accordance with luminance distribution of the projected screen.
