An optical modulator constituting a projector 1 comprises a transmission-type optical modulator 30A and a reflection-type optical modulator 30B. And, the projector 1 comprises: a light guide device 15 which separates an optical flux emitted from a light source device 11 by reflection and transmission to guide to the transmission-type optical modulator 30A and the reflection-type optical modulator 30B respectively; a color separation device 20 which is disposed in an optical path of the optical flux from the light guide device 15 to the reflection-type optical modulator 30B and separates an optical flux emitted from the light guide device 15 into a plurality of color light beams on a time-sharing basis to emit to the reflection-type optical modulator 30B; and a light synthesis device 40 which synthesizes the light flux modulated by the transmission-type optical modulator 30A and the reflection-type optical modulator 30B to emit to a projection optical device 50.
