To provide a protective material and protective clothing which comprise at least one layer of a selectively permeable layer that has permeation inhibiting capability against gaseous organic chemical substances but permeability to water vapor and which, being laminated without the lowering in the water-vapor permeability of the selectively permeable layer resulted from the adhesion, are lightweight and flexible and has high water-vapor permeability.

The protective material and the protective clothing comprise at least one layer of a selectively permeable layer that has permeation inhibiting capability against gaseous organic chemical substances but permeability to water vapor. The selectively permeable layer comprises at least 60 wt.% of a cellulose derivative, and the lamination of the selectively permeable layer with another layer is conducted using an adhesive having a melt index of ≤100 g/10 min.
