To provide a proton conductor, along with a process for producing the same and an electrochemical device, which is excellent in proton conductivity, film-forming characteristics, and workability, with no degradation in proton conductivity even under a dry atmosphere.
The proton conductor comprises silicon oxide, bronsted acid, and a derivative of a carbonaceous material composed of carbon and proton (H+) dissociating groups introduced to carbon atoms of the carbonaceous material. The proton conductor is produced by a step of forming a compound composed of silicon oxide and bronsted acid by a sol-gel method, and a step of mixing the compound with a derivative of a carbonaceous material obtained on introducing proton (H+) dissociating groups to carbon atoms forming a carbonaceous material composed of carbon. The electrochemical device is composed of a first pole, a second pole, and an electrolyte contacting electrically to both poles. The electrolyte is a proton conductor.
