Abstract:
A pump comprises pressure and suction valves controlled in use by the pressure differences of the working fluid, in particular a gaseous fluid. The valve (B) remote from the connection to the system (the suction connection (10) in the positive pressure- generating pump in the Figure) is associated with a bypass (16) which inter-connects opposite sides of the valve during starting. The bypass (16) remains open, at least intermittently, during the normal closing times of the valve but is closed during the closing times of the valve (13) when the operating speed range of the pump is reached. The valve (13) is in the form of a flexible tongue (22) and the bypass (16) is provided by the stepping back of the valve seat (17) from the plane containing the sealing surface of the tongue when the latter is in its non- deflected position shown.
