Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a purification method simply obtaining highly pure menthol useful as a flavor for food, etc., having a clean strong refrigerant feeling, refreshing, clear flavor by contacting a specific crude menthol with super critical carbon dioxide allowing to remove the impurity such as discomfort flavor, etc., by fractional extraction.
SOLUTION: (A) A crude menthol extracted, as a part which crystallizes in cold state, from essential oil obtained by steam distillation of dried leaf and stems of Mentha arvensis containing 0-10wt.% of water, is allowed to contact with (B) super critical carbon dioxide at 35-100°C under 76-350kg/cm2, in some cases the succeeding contact is carried out at the same temperature and under higher pressure than the previous treatment, (C) allowing to remove the unpleasant odor or unpleasant taste (flavor), bitter taste, hogweed flavor, heavy taste material, resinous material, etc., by fractional extraction. Preferably, the fractional extraction is carried out in a state that the component (B) is used as a 2-phase state to the component (A).
