PURPOSE: To make axis alignment possible while optically viewing the flanks of fibers at the time of fusion splicing by arranging stress imparting parts symmetrically with a core added with a rare earth element into plural layers of clads varying in refractive index on the outer side of this core.
CONSTITUTION: The first clad 2 is formed on the periphery of the core 1 and the second clad 3 is formed on the periphery thereof and the two stress imparting parts 4, 4' are formed on the outer side of the core 1 symmetrically with the core 1. The core 1 is formed by adding a dopant consisting of GeO2, for increasing the refractive index, the rare earth element, such as erbium, and metal, such as phosphorus, at need to quartz glass and is formed to a high refractive index of about specific refractive index Δ=1.0 to 1.5% of the refractive index of pure quartz glass. The first clad 2 is formed by adding fluorine to quartz glass in such a manner that its refractive index attains Δ=-0.5 to -0.7%. The second clad 3 is formed of the pure quartz glass or is formed by adding the dopant, such as fluorine, to the quartz glass in such a manner that Δ=-0.0 to -0.4% is attained. The stress imparting parts 4 are formed of quartz glass doped with B2O3.
