This raw material charging device 1 comprises an outer case 2 having a hanger 5 at its upper portion and a rotary hook 6 for suspending the raw material at its lower portion, a core 3 mounted inside of the outer case movably to the outer case, and a heat-shield plate 4 integrated with the core. When the raw material charging device is lowered toward an opening portion of the upper lid 21 through the hanger, only the outer case is continuously lowered even after the heat-shield plate 4 is brought into contact with the upper lid 21 and stopped, thus the rotary hook and the core are separated from each other, the rotary hook separated from the core is rotated by gravity of the raw material so that the raw material is removed from the rotary hook, and the raw material removed from the rotary hook is charged into the molten metal.
