PURPOSE: To realize a compact dictionary together with improvement of the character recognizing rate and also to ensure the stable input of characters by changing the character code corresponding to a standard pattern in response to an input mode.

CONSTITUTION: A means 7 prepares an intermediate pattern as a standard pattern 5 to plural similar characters and then sets an input mode. A means 8 changes the character code corresponding to the pattern 5 in response to the input mode. Then the input mode is changed so that a writer can deliver his/her desired character out of similar characters. Thus an intermediate character pattern is used as the pattern 5 for the similar characters which may possibly be misrecognized. As a result, the characters are never misrecognized and the character code corresponding to the pattern 5 is automatically changed in response to the change of the input mode. Then the writer can surely deliver his/her desired characters and therefore the stable input of characters is secured.
