Abstract:
PURPOSE:To recover easily in good efficiency a Lewis acid used as a catalyst in a process for copolymerizing an unsaturated hydrocarbon with a heteroatom- containing unsaturated hydrocarbon by forming a complex in this polymerization system. CONSTITUTION:A process for recovering a Lewis acid from the polymerization system obtained by copolymerizing an unsaturated hydrocarbon with a heteroatom-containing unsaturated hydrocarbon in the presence of a Lewis acid represented by the formula: MXn (wherein M is a metal atom selected from among groups IB-VB and VIII of the periodic table; X is halogen; (n) is the valance of the metal; and when (n) is 2 or greater, X groups are halogen atoms of different kinds), wherein the heteroatom-containing unsaturated hydrocarbon is added to the polymerization system in the absence of the unsaturated hydrocarbon to form a complex of the heteroatom-containing hydrocarbon with the Lewis acid. As the Lewis acid, other Lewis acids than MXn, e.g. aluminum compounds, zinc compounds and magnesium compounds having metal- carbon bonds, cannot be used because they cause polymerization with the heteroatom-containing unsaturated compounds in the course of recovering the Lewis acids.
