PURPOSE: To improve the efficiency of the transfer of the combustion heat of CO to a molten metal by forming the plane section in the body part of a smelting furnace body to an elliptical shape and providing tuyeres for secondary combustion of CO to the furnace wall on the major axis side in the position of the body part where a slag layer exists.
CONSTITUTION: At least the body part of the smelting furnace body 20 is formed into the elliptical shape in such a manner that the plane section thereof has about 9/10W1/5 ratio Db/Da between the minor and major axes Db and Da. Plural and single tuyeres 22, 24 for blowing O2 for secondary combustion are respectively provided to one and the other side walls in the body part of the furnace 20. A reaction takes place in a molten metal 30 and a huge amt. of CO is generated when, for example, a top blown decarburization method is executed in such furnace body 20. The CO rises at a high speed in the slag layer 32 but is burned by the jets of the O2 blown from a lance 34 and the tuyeres 22, 24 in separate upper and lower directions; at the same time, the layer 32 moves toward A in the upper part and swivels in a direction B in the vertical direction. As a result, the combustion heat retained in the layer 32 is successively and efficiently transferred to the molten metal 30.
