PURPOSE:To enhance the wear-resistant capability of a cam slide surface on a remolten and chilled metal cam shaft, by forming the cam shaft with a chill hardened layer having, as a main phase, a cementite structure obtained by application of high density energy irradiation, and a quenching hardened layer. CONSTITUTION:On a cam slide surface in a cast iron cam shaft, there are formed a chill hradened layer 4 obtaied by application of high density energy irradiation such as, for example, TIG arc irradiation, and a quenching hardened layer. With this arrangment, the slide characteristics such as, for example, wear- resistant capability, anti-scuffing ability, of the cam slide surface may be improved, and the slide characteristics of the cast iron cam shaft may be made excellent over the entire periphery of the cam slide surface.
