Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enhance the wear-resistant capability of a remolten and chilled metal cam saft, by forming the cam shaft with a chill hardened layer formed by cast-molding with the use of a chilled metal and a chill hardened layer having, as a main phase, a cementite structure obtained by application of high density energy irradiation. CONSTITUTION:On a cam slide surface in a cast iron cam shaft, there is formed a chill hardened layer 4 having, as a main phase, a cementite structure obtained by application of high density energy irradiation such as, for example, TIG arc irradiation, and further, in a part of a cam profile surface, there is formed a chill hardened layer 5 which is formed by cast molding with the use of a chilled metal. With this arrangement, the slide characteristics such as, for example, wear-resistant capability, anti-scuffing ability, of the cam slide surface may be improved.
