PURPOSE: To remove insoluble solid substances from a formed product of coal liquefaction by a simple device easily, by extracting the insoluble solid substances in the formed product solution of coal liquefaction with glycerol and separating the substances.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material slurry consisting of coal powder and a solvent is subjected to hydrogenation and liquefaction in the presence or absence of a catalyst, to give a formed product of coal liquefaction. The formed product is blended with glycerol with stirring, allowed to stand preferably at 100°C, and, if necessary, under pressure, so that the product is separated into the solvent layer containing coal liquefied oil and the glycerol layer containing the insoluble solid substances. The glycerol layer is removed. The extracting and separating operations may be repeated any times.
