To obtain a new response regulator comprising an isolated polypeptide containing an amino acid sequence having identities at various levels for a specific amino acid sequence and useful for the screening of antibacterial compounds, treatment, diagnosis, etc., of bacterial infections.
This new response regulator is a histidine kinase polypeptide comprising an isolated polypeptide having at least 70% identity, 80% identity, 90% identity or 95% identity to an amino acid sequence represented by formula I or II over the entire length of formula I or II, an isolated polypeptide which comprises the amino acid sequence represented by formula I or II or is the amino acid sequence represented by formula I or II. The response regulator is useful for the screening of antibacterial compounds, treatment, diagnosis, etc., of infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae. The compound is obtained by probing a chromosomal DNA library of the Streptococcus pneumoniae with an oligonucleotide derived from a partial sequence and expressing the resultant gene.
