Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing powders of reactive metals, namely, zirconium, titanium or hafnium or of alloys from corresponding oxides or oxide mixtures, and to provided a reaction pot for implementing the method.SOLUTION: This invention relates to the method and an apparatus for production of powders of metals or alloys having a mean particle size less than 10 μm and containing at least one of reactive metals, namely, zirconium, titanium, or hafnium, by metallothermic reduction of oxides or halides of the reactive metals with the aid of a reducing metal. The powder of the metals or alloys is retarded by adding a passivation gas or gas mixture in and/or after the reduction of the oxides or halides. Both reduction and retardation are performed in a single gas-tight reaction pot which can be evacuated.
