PURPOSE: To enable grinding of the entire or optional area of a roll body length to a prescribed profile in a method for pressing the adjacent rolls of a cross roll type rolling mill in contact with each other and polishing the rolls by moving specifically the rolls.
CONSTITUTION: Respectively paired work roll 1 and backup roll 3 as well as a work roll 2 and a backup roll 4 are crossed at an optional angle θ in the direction perpendicular to rolling in grinding lower roll groups, 2, 4 of, for example, a cross roll type 4-high rolling mill. The rolls 1, 2 are pressed to contact with each other without biting a rolling material therebetween at the same instant and the rolls 1W4 are rolled to start grinding. As a result the rolls are polished to each other into a belt shape of a slight width with the point O' as a center as the rolls 2, 4 contact with each other at the crossing point O' thereof. The position of the point O' is thereupon moved at an adequate speed between the roll body lengths along the direction perpendicular to rolling by operating the crossing mechanism while the upper and lower roll groups or either thereof is maintained at the angle θ, by which the polishing is accomplished.
