To provide a roll machining method which highly accurately form a three-dimensional shape pattern of a quadrangular pyramid or a triangular pyramid on the surface of the roll.
A circumferential groove 60 is formed on the surface by moving a radial diamond tool 36 into the roll rotating with high speed, the machining is repeated while gradually feeding the diamond tool 36 axially, and the circumferential groove is machined at a constant pitch. After that, the roll is indexed circumferentially, a groove 62 extending axially is formed on the surface of the roll while feeding a fly cutter 39 axially of the roll, the machining is repeated while gradually indexing the roll, and the axial groove 62 crossing the circumferential groove 60 is formed at the constant pitch.
