To provide a rotary electric machine which improves the durability by prolonging the service life of a brush.
In a motor 2 (the rotary electric machine) which is used in a starter 1, for example, the brush 8 is urged toward the outer circumferential surface of a commutator 7 by means of a brush spring 9. When the starter 1 is operated, the brush 8 is worn out by the sliding friction with the commutator 7. Since the worn-out part is pushed out from a brush holder 10 at any time by means of the brush 8, the brush 8 always comes into proper contact with the commutator 7. At a moment in time when the joint 12c of a lead wire 12 comes into contact with the slit end 10d, the brush is not pushed out any more and reaches the end of service life. When the lead wire 12 connected to the brush 8 is a stranded wire having a circular cross-section, the length M between the joint 12c and the slit end 10d is increased and thereby a large wear allowance of the brush 8 is taken.
