Abstract:
PURPOSE:To eliminate turbulent air occurring in the back of a sail and maintain the most appropriate angle of the sail against the direction of a wind by stretching wires for expanding or contracting/a soft sail over a pair of masts traveling by themselves on rails and by providing a pair of winding means respectively on each mast. CONSTITUTION:On both sides of a deck 4 a pair of rails 5, 5a are layed, on which rails a pair of trucks 6, 6a are mounted to travel freely thereon, on which truck 6 a mast 7 having a winding device 11 and on which truck 6a a mast 7a having a winding device 11a are installed perpendicularly, and between which masts 7, 7a is provided a soft sail 10 whose top and bottom are contractably supported by wires 12, 12a. At sea, the soft sail is set to make the trucks 6, 6a travel on the rails freely in the front or rear direction of the ship according to the variations of the direction of a wind and an air current.
