PURPOSE: To heighten energy density and to lengthen charge-discharge cycle life by specifying the total specific surface area, micropore specific surface area, and the ratio of the micropore specific surface area to the total specific surface area of a carbon material for a negative electrode.
CONSTITUTION: A positive electrode is formed with a transition metal chalcogen compound. A negative electrode 3 is formed with a carbon material in which the atomic ration of hydrogen to carbon is less than 0.10, spacing (d002) of face (002) by an X-ray wide angle diffraction method is 3.37-3.75, crystalline size (Lc) in C axis is 5-150, micropore specific surface area is 0.8m2/g or more, the total specific surface area is 1m2/g or more, and the ratio of the micropore specific surface area to the total specific surface area is 0.05∼0.9. An active material is lithium or alkali metals mainly comprising lithium. A battery having long charge-discharge cycle life and high reliability is obtained.
