PURPOSE: To obtain the secular degradation control method which saves the labor of a measuring operation, whose measuring accuracy is enhanced, whose measuring cycle is shortened and which prevents an accident and a trouble by a method wherein the measuring operation is automated by using an ultrasonic displacement sensor, an automatic vehicle-number readout device and a personal computer and, while a torpedo car is being run, its trunk-part size and its surface shape are measured.
CONSTITUTION: Ultrasonic displacement sensors 2A, 2B are faced and arranged so as to sandwich the track of a torpedo car, and a limit switch, a ground probe 8 and a vehicle-number readout device 9 are arranged on their upstream side. When the torpedo car is started from a refractory repair place and the limit switch is actuated, a timer is operated, and a diameter-size measuring device 10 is operated only when the torpedo car is passed between the sensors 2A, 2B within the set time of the timer. In addition, a vehicle number is read out by the readout device 9 which has been arranged just before it, it is inputted to a personal computer 11, and it is used to control a life. The device 10 can measure a surface shape, it can detect a one sided swell or the like, and, when it is automated and constituted to be on-line, a measuring cycle can be shortened.
