Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide the subject medium containing an organic nitrogen source treated with lactobacillus to remove substances assimilable by lactobacillus and a specific sugar source and enabling easy and accurate determination of the number of living cells in foods, drinks, pharmaceuticals, etc., containing bifidobacterium cells.

CONSTITUTION: The objective medium contains an organic nitrogen source treated with lactobacillus to remove substances assimilable by lactobacillus and a sugar source consisting of an oligosaccharide of formula Gal-(Gal)n-Glc (Gal is galactose residue; Glc is glucose residue; n is 1-4). The organic nitrogen source is preferably yeast extract, etc., and the oligosaccharide is preferably a sugar having a purity of 85-98%, free from sugars assimilable by lactobacillus and produced by treating galactooligosaccharide with lactobacillus.
