Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a variable wavelength light source having an ultra large band by using an array waveguide type grating as a wavelength selecting mechanism.
CONSTITUTION: Focal planes 14A, 14B and arc surfaces 15A, 15B on the side remote from the former, are connected by a plurality of array waveguides 16 having a constant length between each adjacent waveguides. Meanwhile, a gain waveguide semiconductor substrate 11A is formed with a plurality of gain waveguides 17 having a normal semiconductor structure and connected to the focal plane 14A of a sector shape slab waveguide 13A, and a gain waveguide semiconductor substrate 11B is formed a single output waveguide 18 connected with the focal plane 14B of a sector shape slab waveguide 13B. In this arrangement, an optical circuit composed of the sector shape waveguides 13A, 13B and the array waveguides 16 is the so-called array waveguide type grating having a function the same as that of a refraction grating type merging and branching filter.
