PURPOSE: To separate a cis-and trans-1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid ester mixture into its constitutents, in simple reaction processes, by hudrolyzing the mixture stepwise using a caustic alkali.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of cis- and trans-1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid esters is hydrolyzed in a water-containing alcohol at 30W40°C for 7W12 hours using a caustic alkali in an amount equimolar to the trans-ester, whereby the trans species of the carboxylic acid is separated selectively. Subsequently, unreacted cis species is refluxed under heating at 60W120°C for 5W8 hours in a water-containing alcohol, using a small excess mole of a caustic alkali, whereby cis species of the carboxylic acid is separated.
EFFECT: The desired compounds are obtained in high purity and yield at low costs.
