To perform the operation confirmation inspection of a position detecting mechanism of a shift lever with high accuracy by providing a fixed contact in a position detecting mechanism of the shift lever with a contact for inspection which can be kept into contact with a movable contact only when the shift lever is located on a P range.
In the P return inspection of a shift lever 6 executed before the shipping, when the shift lever 6 is moved from the P indentation position to the P free position through a cam lock position in the P-return, a movable contact 46c is brought into contact with an L contact and the fixed contact 48c is ON in the P indentation position, the movable contact 46c is OFF at A part in the cam lock position, and the movable contact 46c is brought into contact with the fixed contact 48d for inspection and the fixed contact 48c is ON in the P free position. With this change, the continuity/discontinuity by the movement of the movable contact 46c is confirmed by the lighting-on, lighting-off and lighting-on of LED by supplying the power to a L contact by an inspection machine, whereby the manufacturing of each component of the shift lever device with high accuracy can be confirmed.
