PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a therapeutic agent for geriatric dementia, etc., including Alzheimer's disease, due to its activity of activating ChAT in cholinergic neurocytes.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [R1 is a steroid compound residue; R2 is H or a 1-4C alkyl; R3 is a 1-15C alkyl, formula II (R6 and R7 are each H, a halogen, a 1-4 alkyl, OH, etc.; (1) is 0-6), etc.; R4 is H or a 2-7C acyl; R5 is R14O (R14 is H or a 2-7C acyl), etc.; X is O or S], e.g. 3α-[N-(3-deoxy-2-O- methyl-α-D-glycero-D-galacto-2-nonulopyranosonyl)amino] cholestane. This compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III (R4' is a 2-7C acyl) with a compound of formula IV, chlorinating the product, then reacting a compound of the formula R3OH with the same.
