PURPOSE: To prevent consolidation of a material packed layer of a lower part and to improve productivity by high permeation by regularly dispersing a support member having a sinter cake support surface on a sintering grate having a pallet group to be connected and fed, and so hanging it as to embed it in the layer.
CONSTITUTION: At least one or more sinter cake support members 12 each having a trapezoidal shape are provided at a suitable interval in a lateral direction of a pallet 4. In this case, the member 12 is embedded in a packed layer 5 of a material charged through a chute 3 at a position to be engaged under a drum feeder 2a provided at a lower part of a surge hopper 2. Then, a surface layer of the layer 5 is ignited by an igniting furnace 6, the air is sucked to its lower part to burn coke in the layer 6, and sintering reaction is advanced. Thus, a flat platelike sinter case is supported without excess or insufficiency to improve permeability of the case and the layer 5 to improve productivity.
